LinkedIn nearly doubles stock price on opening day
LinkedIn is probably quite happy today – on its first day of trading as a public company, its initial public offering of $45 per share nearly doubled to close at $83.20. LinkedIn, which runs a social media network for business use, is the first American social media company to go public. It has the largest valuation for a US Internet company since Google in 2004.
NASA chooses New Brunswick student to help pick new moon landing sites
A student of my alma mater, the University of New Brunswick, was selected by NASA to join their team in evaluating future landing sites on the moon.
Tiziana Trabucchi is one of two Canadian students selected to work this summer at the Constellation Lunar Exploration Program in the Johnson Space Centre in Houston. She is working on her PhD on Martian geology.
UNB always had a great program for studying the space sciences; when I was an engineering grad student, I had the chance to work at some leading aerospace companies. It was an amazing experience, but I’ll bet it’s not even half as amazing as having the chance to work with NASA in Houston!
Spreed, Globe in dispute over mobile app
In the digital age, struggles between content creators and content delivery systems are heating up.
When hundreds of iPhone and iPad users of the Globe and Mail app were surprised last week to see their news replaced by a single article written by a company most probably hadn’t even recognized – Canadian mobile app provider Spreed Inc.
“From the moment [the app] started making ‘real money’ The Globe began making several decisions that severely harmed the relationship between our two companies,” Spreed CEO Anthony Novac wrote in the scathing article also posted on their corporate blog. “The sad result is that our differences will likely be settled in court.”
The Globe and Mail app is actually a Spreed app which syndicated Globe news content. Spreed charges that the Globe prematurely terminated their agreement to make their own app when they found out how profitable the app was. The app generates revenue through advertisements.
For all us app users, Spreed has released an update that turns the app into Free Press News, which syndicates content from the Winnipeg Free Press. Those still looking for their G&M fix can download the new Globe & Mail app that was created in-house.

CRTC targets 5Mbps Internet Canada-wide by 2015
It’s a good start – the CRTC has set a (voluntary) challenge to Canadian Internet service providers – deliver 5Mbps broadband Internet speeds in four years.
Over 80% of all Canadian households – mostly in densely populated areas sucha s Toronto – already have access to 5Mbps speeds and higher. However, rural areas continue to be under-served.
The only province currently with 100% broadband coverage is New Brunswick.
Canadian employers add 58,000 jobs in April
Canada created 58,300 jobs last month, reducing the unemployment rate to 7.6%, The Globe and Mail reports. This is an encouraging sign that the economy continues to mend after the 2008 recession:
“Businesses are a little less reluctant about hiring and they really are expanding their head count, and that’s the kind of momentum we need for this recovery to be self-sustaining,” said Emanuella Enenajor, economist at CIBC World Markets.
At this rate, it will take another 3.5 years to lower the unemployment rate to pre-recession levels.
REALTOR Quest 2011 with Doug Devitre
George O’Neill had the privilege of sitting in the “Why Blog?” panel at the 2011 REALTOR Quest held on the morning of May 5th, 2011. This annual event is organized by the Toronto Real Estate Board and was held at the Toronto Congress Centre.

Air Canada Express pilots are equipped with iPads
Air Canada Express, the new regional jet service that opened at Billy Bishop Airport on the Toronto Islands this week, is equipping their flight crew with Apple iPads in lieu of paper manuals, checklists and passenger manifests.
The iPads for the pilot and co-pilot are also loaded with weather information and navigation maps. The flight attendant also has an iPad with passenger information on it. But yes, when in the air, they turn the Wi-Fi connection off.
If buying $500 tablets seems a bit dear, consider this – the Apple devices allow Air Canada to cut 50 pounds of onboard paper documents, reducing weight and fuel costs.
Porsche Club of America Upper Canada Region Open House Day 2011
Our local Porsche club, the Upper Canada Region of the Porsche Club of America, held its annual Open House Day on May 1st at the Canadian Air & Space Museum in Downsview Park, filling the parking lots with flat sixes. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow car enthusiasts and admire Canada’s proud aviation history, including a replica of the legendary Avro Arrow. The Shine ‘n Show car show put on by fellow members featured a Boxster, a GT3, a classic 911 E, a 928, several 944s, Caymans, Carreras and, despite the rain, several drop-tops and Cabriolets. Here’s a few photos of the event.
- Legends: Porsche 911 GTS and the Avro Arrow
- Blacked-out Porsche Carrera 4S
- Porsche Club’s Shine and Show
- Couple of Carreras
- Porsche Cayman and Cabriolet
