55% of Canadian small businesses have no website

68 percent of Canadians are online, but incredibly only 45% of small businesses have online presences, reported Google Canada this week at the Toronto Board of Trade.

Chris O’Neill, managing director at Google Canada emphasized that businesses must be where customers are:

Newspapers, for example, make up six per cent of media consumed by Canadians, but attract around 30 per cent of advertising budgets, he said at a session on the “digital revolution” organized by the Toronto Board of Trade Monday. Digital marketing makes up between 10 and 20 per cent of most companies’ advertising budget, but 68 per cent of Canadians are online, he added.

You’d think that number would be much higher, I mean the internet is now the most popular directory, it’s how people find local business’ and services. Yellow pages knows it! That’s why they’re spending millions advertising their 360 solution, that and to keep their print alive a little longer. Any one else notice the phonebooks getting lighter.

Excellent article, things change and businesses must learn to adapt to the new medium. Thanks!
